Audi TT turns 25 this year.

When it was introduced back in 1998 the automotive world collectively seemed to say:  this can’t be a production car – it’s too radical!

But, in fact, the Audi TT that went into production was nearly identical to the concept car that preceded it. And people loved it.

The radical original was created by a group of American and German automotive designers and went on to production as a coupe and then a roadster.

So, for its anniversary Audi is celebrating with an “Iconic Edition” of the famous and groundbreaking Audi TT RS Coupe.

It’s a limited edition with a mere 100 vehicles being produced in Europe. But still worth studying in terms of what it says about the history of Audi itself.

Audi says the limited edition model hails the original TT with a blend of “passion and performance.”

“While the original TT was defined by its use of aluminum trim, this one reflects contemporary popular notions of sportiness with black wheels and carbon-fiber appliqué,” according to Car & Driver. “The menacing appeal of the TT RS Iconic Edition is undeniable. It sits low to the ground, with an aggressive stance, its 20-inch alloys shod with 255/30 rubber. All are finished in Nardo Grey, and the front end is accentuated by canards, blades, and a splitter; the rear end is fitted with a massive wing, and the optional OLED taillights provide a futuristic touch. This model proves that the third-gen TT’s design has aged really well.”

Back in 1998, the TT’s rounded shape was inspired by the Bauhaus principles preached by design icons such as Paul Klee, Walter Gropus, and Wassily Kandinsky.

“The TT was inspired by Bauhaus’ universal design philosophy of ‘less is more’,” March Lichte, Audi’s head of design, told the media. “The maximum reduction (of the TT’s design) was so radical and courageous that it quickly achieved the highest attribute of good design: to be timeless.”

The newly released TT RS doesn’t have quite as many rounded edges as the original one but Audi managed to keep some of the same design elements that wowed the automotive world back in the day.

Let’s take a look at all the new details as the Audi TT turns 25.
